Gerard Carlin

Gerard Carlin is SONI’s Director of Networks and Innovation. He joined SONI in 2024 and is responsible for Future Markets, Future Power Systems and Networks and Connections, playing a pivotal role in shaping Northern Ireland’s energy future. In his role, Gerard leads SONI’s efforts to modernise and innovate the transmission network and market, ensuring the secure and efficient integration of renewable and intermittent power sources while balancing operational complexity and cost efficiency. An engineer by background, he has 20 years of experience in infrastructure, including the Rail, Water and Oil & Gas Industries. He has held leadership roles at London Underground, Crossrail and Transport for London before joining Northern Ireland Water in 2021 where he worked as Head of Transformation and later, Head of Climate Change. In 2018, he was part of the leadership team brought in to recover the Crossrail project, and as Programme Transition Director was responsible for the handover of the Elizabeth Line.
