Dr. Patrick Delassus

Dr. Delassus , Academic Director of the Medical and Engineering Technology Gateway, brings nearly 30 years of applied research experience, specializing in biomedical engineering, manufacturing engineering, marine engineering, and industry-focused product design. His career also includes over a decade in engineering roles within industry. A key leader in fostering partnerships with medical device companies in the West of Ireland, Dr. Delassus designs and delivers tailored programs—such as the pioneering apprenticeship degree in Manufacturing Engineering—to meet the technical needs of businesses and their staff. His work extends to postgraduate research, Enterprise Ireland-funded DTIF projects, and innovation partnerships with medical device firms. He holds patents for several medical devices and has supervised over 15 postgraduate students, including the institute’s first PhD graduate. Dr. Delassus has cultivated strong collaborations with clinicians and entrepreneurs, playing a pivotal role in securing more than €14 million in research funding from national and international sources. He also spearheaded the creation of the institute’s GMedTech centre under Enterprise Ireland’s Applied Research Enhancement programme, a cornerstone for the Medical and Engineering Technology Gateway. Passionate about industry collaboration, Dr. Delassus is particularly focused on driving innovation and early-stage design development.
