Dr Liam Morris

Dr Liam Morris is a Lecturer in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering and Computing, ATU Galway and is also an Academic Director in the Medical Engineering Technology (MET) in the Atlantic Technological University. Dr Morris graduated with a first class honours degree in Manufacturing Technology from the ATU Galway in 1998 and continued his studies within ATU Galway with a research masters from 1998 – 2000 in the area of biomedical engineering. Dr Morris furthered his education by completing a PhD in the University of Limerick in biomedical engineering from 2000 – 2004 and secured an Enterprise Ireland proof-of-concept funding to continue this research as a Post-Doctoral researcher (2004 – 2005). Dr Morris joined the ATU Galway Lecturing staff in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department in 2005. He is the programme chair for Biomedical Engineering (Level 8) and co-founded the MET gateway. Dr. Morris has engaged with small to multinational biomedical companies, clinical community and other research centres. He has secured over €4 million through innovation partnerships, commercialisation funds, NIH, department of education and IRCSET. Dr. Morris is the current programme chair for Biomedical Engineering. His research work has been heavily involved in assessing cardiovascular diseases computationally and experimentally. Other current research includes applying machine learning methods to stroke patient data treated with mechanical thrombectomy devices and scaffold design for cartilage repair. To, date, he has supervised 10 PhD candidates to completion. His research has generated much interest and has been published in over 50 peer reviewed international journals in which his work has been cited by other leading researchers (~ 2000 citations to date based on Google Scholar), with his team directly supervised by Dr. Morris winning many national and international research awards. He is also a reviewer for leading international journals. Dr. Morris applies universal design for learning principles within his modules and integrates his research with undergraduate teaching and learning with a particular focus on activity-based learning.
